Workers Compensation Insurance is a vital program in any business. It helps protect employees by providing them pay and medical benefits if they were injured in leu of their occupation and it protects employers by limiting their liability in a workplace injury.

Many times employers like to skip out on Workers’ Comp Coverage because they deem it too expensive. This often leads to compliance issues with the state government. In Georgia, workers’ compensation is required if a business has 3 or more employees, this includes the owner. With compliance issues comes fines and increased liability to the employer and a heavier financial burden on the employee in the event of a workplace injury.

An example of how important it is to have WC is when one of our clients had an employee that had a workplace injury. The employee had to be air-lifted to a hospital and then was treated for an extended period of time. The estimated cost for everything was around $200,000 and because the employer had workers’ compensation coverage, the policy paid everything from the air-lift to the hospital stay and ⅔ of lost pay back to the employee who got injured. The workers’ comp policy not only paid for all the previous actions listed but helped save this young employee and his spouse from being in financial ruin.

Workers’ Compensation is not just for people to get paid for being injured at work. It is there to protect the employees and their families in the event of a loss/work place injury and make sure that they still survive in those hard times.

It is important to understand how you as an employer can protect your employees and show compassion in times of need, by offering workers’ compensation for such times.

It is also important to understand if you are compliant with workers compensation laws because large fines can be incurred and restrictions of one’s own business may be impeded. By going to the State Board of Workers Compensation you can see the requirements for all the States and the FAQ that many employers have with workers compensation.

Let us at Client First help you navigate different coverage options and educate on what exactly you will need for your specific business needs.
